This plate rack project plan is easy to build and costs less than $50. It will add style and storage to your kitchen or dining room. With a few minor design changes, this wall-mounted plate rack could become a freestanding cabinet. In this case, you’ll need to counterbore and plug all exposed screws. You can also add a band of trim or crown molding around the top. Once you’ve finalized the design of your plate rack, cut the parts accordingly.
Because we planned on a painted finish, we made this plate rack out of poplar and birch plywood with a medium-density fiberboard (MDF) core. If you want a natural-wood look, you can substitute the material of your choice. Designed to fit between existing cabinets, the unit measures 12 in. deep x 25 in. high x 33 in. wide. To accommodate a different width, simply adjust the lengths of parts B, D, E, F, G, H and I (see cutting list in the PDF).
