Metal marvel
For his wife who likes grapes, Club member Jerry Northrip of Fresno, California, crafted these decorative metal details to embellish the light fixtures in their kitchen. Jerry used 1/4-in. round stock and welding rod for the vines, 1/2-in. steel ball bearings for the fruit and prefabricated leaves from an ornamental iron supplier. He welded everything together and added a few curly tendrils made with binding wire for a realistic touch.

Homegrown gate
Club member Clyde Sauernheimer of Seven Hills, Ohio, replaced an old, rusty enclosure around his prized vegetable garden with this 8-ft.-tall metal fence and charming wood gate. The fence is tall enough to deter the hungry deer that roam Clyde’s neighborhood. The gate features a latch and subtle decorative details, and it is wide enough to accommodate the golf cart that Clyde uses to haul compost to and from the garden.

All-around accent
To give their three-sided fireplace a new face, Club member Bob Weidlich of Cincinnati, Ohio, and his wife first removed the dated wood paneling and trim (see “before” photo). Then they applied 1,200 pounds of stone by hand, giving the room divider an eye-catching earthy look. Bob added bullnose trim around the fireplace opening and filled in the floor with a few sections of ceramic tile for a seamless transformation.

Backcountry basement
It took Club member Dan Cater of Cadott, Wisconsin, about two months to transform his basement into this cabin-style retreat. He added a full bath, a bar for entertaining and a Murphy bed for overnight guests. He finished the walls with horizontal wood panels, installed new laminate flooring and added a drop ceiling. To complete his man cave, Dan also mounted a 55-in. television along one wall.
