Prized porch
To create this impressive backyard porch, Club member Earl Howell of Greene, New York, first built up the foundation using fieldstones; then he added a retaining-wall edge and topped the surface with concrete pavers. Decorative posts support the roof, and two outlets provide convenient access to electricity. Earl used bead board and moldings to add character to the ceiling and even incorporated a handy trap-door compartment for overhead storage.

Tyke bike
Club member Tom Lewis of Pueblo West, Colorado, started from scratch when he built this motorcycle-inspired rocker for his grandchildren. He sketched the design on poster board and enlarged it to create a pattern for the parts, which he cut from cabinet-grade plywood and assembled using wood glue and brad nails. Tom hand painted the rocker and then added a coat of polyurethane to enhance the durability of the finish.

Petite pied-à-terre
After seeing a similar project on TV, Club member David Didion of Garrett, Indiana, was inspired to create this teardrop-style camper. He assembled the trailer frame and topped it with an insulated cabin; then he added cabinetry, a countertop and a small sleeping area inside. The camper features AC and DC electricity, a small door and a ventilation window in the ceiling. The best part, however, is the hinged wall that opens up to the great outdoors.

Grand game table
In creating this intricate game table, Club member Elwood Schmutz of Napa, California, demonstrated not only his talent for woodworking but also his clever use of workshop scraps. The tabletop, which Elwood’s wife helped him design, includes a walnut-and-maple checkerboard in the center surrounded by more than 600 pieces of 11 different woods cut to varying sizes, all pieced together to create the eye-catching variegated surface.
