The first I made sold fast and I didnt know my mom was eyeballin it so I had to turn another one. Took some 2x12 cedar and ran it thru the planer then glued 2 slabs together and started turning. The good material people throw away. |

Nice job Mike, I made a similar one a year or so ago from spalted maple I found at the landfill. Same center design but not the same bowl design as yours. |

Yes GREAT work Dollar and I'll echo Gator's question....what finish did you use? Salad bowl finish or another non-toxic finish? I'm also an avid turner, but slow to try new finishes!! |

Thanks fellas. The finish is just 3 coats of shellac ( clear) sanded between coats with 1200 grit and then 2 coats of wax for wood. I've read sevaral different times that shellac is non toxic when dry and nuts come in shells so its gotta be ok. |

It looks good but to be honest I have never heard of a nut bowl, a salad bowl but not a nut bowl. |

ron45, The nut bowls have been around for many decades. I bought one for my mother in mid 50's and at her death it came back to me. Most of the hardware (nut cracker and meat picks) were missing afte 50+ years.

hr.. Thanks for the input. We just had a regular bowl for the nuts that had a platter under it. The platter had groves in it shaped like the nut cracker and picks, nothing fancy. But if you didn't have the trash can beside you while eating the nuts, well, you got cracked. |
