Simple Stool
Build this classic combination step stool and seat project.
POSTED BY: Dan Cary
November 18, 2010
There aren’t many projects that are attractive, useful, easy-to-build and inexpensive. But this kitchen stool hits on all four notes.
Though I initially envisioned designing something more contemporary with more complicated joinery, I favored a simpler approach after examining other kitchen stools that I liked. The result is a piece with handmade appeal that will improve with age. The seat is a comfortable height for sitting at a countertop, and the step will allow you to reach most upper cabinets.

It really is a simple thing to build..... You can use up shop scraps or make it from really good stock, and get excellent results either way. And, it is useful. Many projects are really done to build skill, and you must then find a use for them. This one is functional - from the start!

Hey, folks ..... I just tried the download. It took about 5 seconds to appear, but flew right through. Check your file extension associations - through "Control Panel". If a PDF file extension is not associated with Adobe Reader, I doubt the file will properly download.
If you are running XP, or Vista, you may have to go to "help" to check the file associations.

It helps if you just give the file time to download and if you have a PDF reader installed

To those who have commented on the too simplicity of this project. I thought the idea of publishing projects was to share projects and NOT to show how complex we could make one. I think this is a great project, small and simple. It may be thought provoking and a way to use some of that scrap materials we have collected on the shelf. If you want something complicated maybe I could share one of a home I designed and built. Let’s keep the projects coming no matter how simple. This is a project that I will surly print, build, and use.

If you folks can't figure out how to download a PDF file, then I doubt if you can hit a nail with a hammer. Stick to comic books.

My download was easy and it printed readily. I appreciate a simple project as a novice woodworker. I think this is something I can tackle as a weekend project. Thanks for including a simpler plan that can increase my skills and confidence ANd be useful.

as they say"ignorance is a bliss". go figure. personally, I think this is a great lil project. sometimes one needs to stop and do something simple to learn how to enjoy again. some of use have done projects as small and simple as a toy for a child or as complex as a multi level ramp for a handicap friend or maybe even building your own work shop. we must all remember that no one here was born a pro. we all had to learn some how. when I joined HCOA they didnt ask what my skill level was as a condition to joining the club. we do have beginners amungst us. my hat goes off to those of you who are just learning and I hope you enjoy the smaller projects that you will find on the site. as for those of us that are a lil more advanced, well keep up the good work and remember, even the beginers just mite be able to teach us something new. personally I think the club is doing a great job showing projects for all skill levels. as far as looking like third grade work, well I feel that comment is way out of line. remember, even God didnt creat the world in a day.

We've made six of these now! The last four we added a few inches all around (except in height) to make them more comfortable for sitting. Plans were easily adaptable!

I agree with you, cinch47. That is why I now run anything that I am trying to match up through the thickness planer. Life became a lot simpler (but noisier!) with that purchase.

Ok, was not able to download the file at first, I have Windows 7, I then right clicked on the pdf file button, then saved it to desktop without opening it. Once I went to desktop it opened just fine. Thanks for the great project, hope to build it soon.

I've made about 20 of these stools. Decorated them for sports teams, colleges, motorcycle clubs, etc. Great for fund raising and gifts. My grand kids sit on them to watch TV or use as night stands.

Downloading problem. First check to see if your browers is blocking Pop-ups. If it is, you might see a yellow bar just above the web page saying that the system is blocking and you may have to click on the yellow bar to enable the pop-up, then you would need to re-click on the download. If this is not the case then maybe your browser is set to not allow downloading of files. Another problem could be that you do not have a .pdf viewer. This can be fixed by downloading .pdf viewer from Adobe.com for free. Another problem could be that you need to double click to get action from your mouse. I hope this helps ANYONE that is not as up to date on computers as some of us are. I see no reason for people to be rude just because someone is having a problem. Being polite and helpful only hurts those that have no respect for themselves or others.
