To create a terra-cotta look on the surface of the concrete patio used for a pergola project (HANDY, May/June 2008, p. 16), we used Rust-Oleum’s Semi-Transparent Concrete Stain Kit. With a base coat, a top coat, an instructional DVD and even a sprayer included in the kit, there’s everything needed to transform plain concrete surfaces into beautiful and colorful creations.

Here’s how to use the kit:

After masking off the surrounding areas with plastic to protect from overspray, simply prepare the concrete surface according to the kit’s directions and then apply the two included colors. The base-coat colors supplied — the lighter and the darker – give a different look; we applied the lighter color from our Terra Cotta kit first and then used the darker color as an accenting topcoat (see photos). If you choose to use the darker color as a base coat, you’ll end up with a richer, darker effect.
