If you plan to use your deck after the sun sets, you'll need to add lighting around the perimeter to prevent guests from accidentally stepping off the edge in the dark.

I opted for a recessed lighting system from Rockler to gently illuminate the deck's edges without overpowering the outdoor atmosphere.

To install this type of system, start by drilling a 3-1/8-in.-dia. x 9/16-in.-deep hole to house the light assembly (photo 1). Switch to a 7/8-in.-dia. spade bit, position the bit at the center of the recess you just created and continue to drill completely through the deck board (photo 2).

Then simply insert the lamp housing into the recess (photo 3), install the bulb and press the lamp lens onto the housing (photo 4).
