    Hey all you roofers/carpenters!

I'm in the planning stages of transforming a rotting porch with a small gable roof (just over front door) into a new deck spanning the front of the house.  I would like the roof to cover the entire deck, and would like to know the best way to tie into the existing house roof, which has about a 4/12 pitch with asphalt shingles covering it.  Should I remove house roofing up to a point high enough to get adequate pitch to the porch roof, and tie into the house rafters, or attach directly to the exterior surface of the existing house roof?

    Thanks in advance.

If you can attach a photo of the front of the house where the roof will be and the basic dimensions of the porch, we can give ya a better plan of action

Most building codes Require the asphalt roofing to be removed, under any new construction.

We built a new deck last year. Building codes required different, stricter sopports for deck with roof. Pier blocks were OK for deck w/o roof, not WITH roof. With roof we would have to had 6x6 supports sunk in concrete 2 feet deep. Also beams would have to be larger with roof. The deck is 12'x24'.

Can you contact your local codes officer. When I built the roof over my existing deck the engineering firm that I had to approve my plans told me exactly what I needed to do to comply with the codes. They should be able to advise you on what you need to do.

I had to change my plans according to the code because my deck is 21' long. I ended up adding an extra post in the middle of the span to make it correct.

This will save you time and allows you order the correct materials the first time.

    Thanks,
    Mike
