If you have many padlocks and the keys to them weighing down your pockets this may be for you. A company named Strattec makes a padlock that is codeable to your vehicle. This means you would only have to use your vehicle key to open the padlock or as many as you chose.

A one page PDF from Strattec showing the lock.

    This link shows more information

A direct link to see if there is one to match your vehicle

They are simple to code to your vehicle. Just stick your key in the lock.

The center link you can see all about the lock. How it works etc.

Strattec Auto Key Codeable Padlocks. You can get them from a locksmith for around $28.00 or if you sign up with

You can get them for $15.00

That can be done to any lock. The security is only as good as your key way. Did you also do every lock on the house to match? That would be a benefit, then you would only need one key for everything. There are many methods to open normal locks. The Strattec lock can only be opened with a vehicle key which is more secure.  More of a varity of locks also. Too hard for most people to open. It all depends on what a person really wants.

    Joe,

I started doing this when working in Seattle and my house was in another county about an hour and a half away. That way my girlfriend/partner could have access to my job provided apt as well. Been doing this for 16 years, and use the square head DND keys. The original keys are in my safe. And, yes, all locks and bolts are matched.

There has been alot of talk between Locksmiths about DND keys. As to copy or not. No one has any set standards. Some will and some wont. Home Depot , Lowes and Walmart workers dont even know what DND means.
The safe is a good place to keep the originals. They usually have the code numbers on them.

I have found that in Seattle, Tacoma, and Kitsap  county that the honest locksmiths will not touch a DND. The shadier ones will, but most of the time the keys will not work because they do not align the key properly or choose the wrong blank because they can not identify the key.
With that said, since I work in the maintenance field and carry both the KW and Shlage key gauges in my wallet, I had an officer who wanted to arrest me for 'burglary tools' . That was a fun hour until my regional manager returned the call.

I bet that was fun with the Police. Even though I dont work as a Locksmith now, I do have all equiptment to open things. I carry my paper work anytime I have Locksmith tools on me. When I was working and moving around the first thing I would do is introduce myself to all Police departments

I have also had the law frown upon the array of "burglar tools, keys and loaded weapons" in My position.

After they pull me up...... All good.

I had several DND keyed locks, unfortunately, the 7 land tumblers were custom made for WICO, who went out of business, and Illinois Lock had no idea who made their tumblers.
All was not lost though, for 5 bucks each, since we did have an original key, they replaced the tumblers with their own brand of tumbler.

I only have 1 key for all the locks on my house and garage, 1 key for all padlock locked items, and 1 key for all cabinet lock type items.
Something as big as a car or house key would never fit any of the cabinet locks and I don't want hired outdoor helpers to have access to my house, only the storage sheds.
I don't tell them the same key that fits the sheds fits every padlock on the place.

The back door on my house and an outdoor accessed cleaning storage closet uses split pins in the tumbler so that two different keys will work in it.
The main key that fits everything, and the key we give to the housekeeper to gain entry when we are not home, fits the back door and storage locker only.
Went around circles with the local locksmith after moving south over this one. He kept telling us that the lock we have cannot be master-keyed.
Don't know why not, been doing it for over 40 years with this same brand and model lock, never had a problem before!
The only thing you have to be careful about is that the second key has the lands far enough apart so you don't end up with too thin a pin!

As an aside: I don't believe it! The power went out for about 20 minutes, and when the power came back on and the computers booted up, it came right back here, without even the loss of a single keystroke. Amazing! It must be an internal log file, because I get this same action if working on a document also!
