Posted this a while ago, got a good answer and cannot seem to get the search box to work. There was a rather easy way, using a Construction Master calculator to figure equal spacing of pickets/balusters, between posts. Anybody know this method?

    SkiTeach,

Did you change user IDs?  This appears to be the only post you have made under the name "skiteach".  If you know the name you posted the first question under, it is easy to simply look up the user profile and click on "Posts by User".  From there you are just one click away from your previous post and any answers provided.

    Hi Ski

This is a touchy subject amongst stair builders due to misinterpretations of the code by some states.

Due to the new 10" Treadrun Rule, most staircases will now require 3 balusters per tread to make them look right.

Baluster Spacing goes by the 4" Sphere Rule (used to be 6").....

On a staircase, the handrail has a 34" minimum Rake Rule. However, Top Guardrails have different rules.
In a Residence, such as your deck, it's 36" minimum height. If a Commercial installation, it's 42" minimum height.

If you build a Deck, make sure NO Baluster or any GAP anywhere allows a 4" Sphere to be able to be passed through it, and you'll be OK.
This includes Deck to Lower Rail, as well as Top Rail to Top Guardrail gaps.

Legnth of all railing including stair rail where the balusters will be install divided by 5.5
this will give you the number of balusters and a couple extra just in case.

Jig. Take and cut two pieces of 2x4 at 4" long, take one spindle (baluster) and up from each end screw the 2x perpendicular to baluster. Make sure the baluster is centered in the 4" blocks, also make sure the blocks rest against the rail stiles. This will be your spacer and after each move turn the jig upside down to insure they will be level.

Install.... Measure the distance between both post and divide that number by 2, this will give you the exact center. Place the first baluster in the middle of that mark making sure it is in fully where it is to go, nail/screw the bottom then level then nail/screw the top. Using your jig placed against the first baluster install the second one Note: you will not have to use the level until the next rail. Turn the jig upside down and place against the second one and install the third. This will keep all the baulsters evenly space inbetween all post and level.

Scooter... You would be better off going with a metal rail, you can either install it on the side or top. Just make sure it's made for outside.

Metal is what I was thinking if I put it on the south wall (right side in pic)

To keep with the texture of the Spanish theme Black Wrought Iron.

    Maybe Chain?
