Why is it...that when I'm (or you) are driving through a parking lot, folks driving heavy duty 4X4 vehicles (trucks and what not) always slow down for a 2 inch speed bump?

This is rapidly becoming my greatest pet peeve!

Today (again), I was leaving my nearest liqour store after buying a case of Yuengling and a couple packs of Lucky Strikes (no skirts)...and I once again found myself in this a moving parade.

Was it because folks were crossing from the parking area to the store fronts?

    No.

Was it because the sun was shining in the driver's eyes?

    Again...no.

All the vehicles in front of me were slowly creeping (idle speed) over  1 1/2" high speed bumps!

Is there a suspension problem that I'm unaware of?

My Ranger is 11 years old.  I've driven across rocks, over pot holes that were better described as fox holes...yet God help the driver of that 4X4 2010 Silverado Extended Cab or the knuckle head driving a Jeep Cherokee.

    Is it just me?

Am I expecting too much or did I waste 1/2 a can of my fog horn blaring at them to get-a-getting?

LOL Too true Craig, I think these same drivers are the ones who gun the gas then pile on the brakes for the stop sign. Why the hurry to stop?

    Craig,
I took the fuse out of the horn circuit, and my "road rage" is a quiet scene of banging on the steering wheel. (windows up, of course.)
Then I had the truck in for repairs recently, and the mechanic informed he also fixed a "few" circuits................ok.
My daughter called me the next day, while she was borrowing my truck, screaming at me that she "road raged" a cop that wasn't going after the light turned green, and why the heck did I FIX the horn?!?!?!?!

    so there ya have it.
Ending pain is a great job!

Craig, I will give you the answer I got when I asked the SIL of my friend at her wedding and a couple of other possible explanations.

"A vehicle must look good, doesn't matter how it runs. Looks are everything." That is the response I got when questioned about my dirty beat-up 4X4 Dodge diesel 3/4 ton. I said my truck went where and when I wanted to go somewhere, on road or off, pasture or city driving, that it was reliable. She then said something about the reason for needing a 4X4 was they looked good driving down the street and if it died call a towtruck. Needless to say she was from a large city and didn't know anything about life outside of the city. I also took her words to mean she didn't know what a truck, much less a 4X4 could do.

One more explanation of why some people that have no use for them drive 3/4 ton or larger 4X4's. A lady from a larger city called a radio station talk show when they were discussing smart cars and said that she drove a Dodge 3500 diesel 4X4 because of an accident she had been in a few years previously. Said she had been driving a small car and was on the losing end when another vevicle ran a red light. She bought her first truck when she got out of the hospital, a 4X4 Quad cab 1 ton. She said that if she was in another accident, she wanted to be in something that was going to win. The truck might get totalled but she thought the truck would protect her better than a little car. She said that it took time to get use to driving it like a truck and not like a car, such as slowing down for little potholes, speed bumps, parking, etc.

And yes there might be a suspension problem with those big heavy duty trucks. People buy them and expecting them to ride like a cadillac. It ain't gonna happen. The only way to get that ride out of them is to drive real slow.

    Well Craig

You'll be glad to know I'm NOT one of them!

I either ignore speed bumps or actually punch-it to hop over them, to get the weight OFF those A-Frames!

Drives me NUTS TOO when I see folks DUMP the weight of their Car or Truck onto those front axles as they near a speed bump.
    Or braking into a corner!
Or as the saying goes, THEY WALK AMONGST US, only in this case THEY DRIVE AMONGST US, hi hi.....

With so many people down here that drive with one foot on the gas and the other on the brake,
I'm surprised the brake repair shops don't outnumber the oil change places, hi hi.......

I believe the purpose of the speed bump is to keep traffic speed low. By creeping over them, whether in a Smart car or a F450 SuperDuty, one is complying with the wishes of the people who ordered that the speed bumps be installed.

Good thing those people aren't in my car with me when I don't slow down to go over them, or they might have a small fit about it. LOL Not saying I'm a rebel or anything, but that's one situation where I won't comply.
If it's stuck, force it. If it breaks, it needed replaced anyway.

If you are goingrhe. Speed limit to begin with.............why slow down
Exceptions of course. Our here in Az. mntn.drivers will make you nuts with thebrakes at every rise or curve. I think out loud, get off the gas before brakes.

The one's that drive with two feet.

One on the gas the other on the brake.

As far as those speed bumps seem to be working.

They may not see that little truck your driven.

Back home, a shopping center installed these humongous super high speed bumps.

Don't know how much they paid to have them installed, but I know it cost them about 2 million in lawsuits, car repairs and the removal of them!

Down here in east Podunk they have several of them, but they are mainly to keep the water from running into the front doors of stores that have their fronts facing uphill.

However, placing them in driving lanes don't slow down traffic any, as nobody down here drives in the intended locations anyhow. Most use the wrong side of the road, the shoulder or directly across the shortest distance through a parking lot.

The speed bumps in contention here are rubber-like and are held down by some adhesive as well as rail spikes.

Strangely enough, some of them disappear about every three days...including the spikes.

    Hi Scooter

I was born and raised in Despair and Misery (Des Peres, MO)
Then I moved 3 miles north to the city of the Broken Hearted (Creve Coeur, MO)
About a year and a half after marrying a cute southern belle, we moved back to her home town of East Podunk (Knoxville, TN).....

Back Home refers to St. Louis County.....
East Podunk refers to East Podunk, where taxes are more than double, and the streets are lined with Pawn Shops, Buy Here Pay Here derelict vehicle sales, Title Loans and a General Store ironically called Dollar General, hi hi......
My neighbor to the west is a government housing project, nearly empty now due to vandalism, and to the east are rows of Meth Houses.....
The Police here make Bonnie and Clyde look like Angels and the Keystone Kops would be a more desirable option!
Larry, Curly and Moe run the Utilities and Shemp was elected Mayor!

And ALL those pictures you see posted on-line, taken at WalMart, are from our local WalMart, hi hi......
If you EVER Need a Good Laugh, stop by and visit sometime!

Don't pay attention to the traffic reports, no need to make a detour, that MAJOR traffic jamb all the traffic copters are talking about on the radio, and TV shows are suspended to give the news account of the Heavy Traffic; all that happened was, 6 cars were caught by the same red light at the same time.
Otherwise, we just sit in the rockers on our front porch, watching the grass grow, as the highlight of our day.
Oh and we use Master Card to help simplify our Hectic Lives, hi hi.....

Craig, et al, when we lived in the Denver, CO area for a couple of years, facny paint jobs on super jacked up pickups was the rage. These things were designed to go rock climbing in the mountains, but NEVER left the pavelemt because their owners did not want to scratch the paint - LOL.

Real rock climbing trucks had the dings and rock scrapes to prove where thay had been - no fancy paint there, but great looking rigs.

I have the same complaint as you, plus one more - the hot rodder that drives at least 10 mph over the limit, but has to nearly park and spread a lunch to change lanes or turn a corner.  Do they thing the vehicle will roll over??

Bill, but many know me as Bubba - (SW of Houston)

"I was born and raised in Despair and Misery (Des Peres, MO)" - Gary

You ever read any Lee Child books?  One is set between Despair and Misery, CO.  I liked that particular book so well that I've listened to the audio book twice - I'm a truck driver, so I have long periods of sitting with nothing to do.

Anyway, people up north go slow over speed bumps so their cars don't fall apart, and people down south go slow over speed bumps because the electric scooters for Walmart shoppers are straining under the load they are carrying.

    Craig:
Have you ever owned or driven a Heavy Duty Truck? Especially a 4x4. The suspension is so rigid and stiff they they bounce like hell and just maybe they don't want to spill that cup of fresh coffee or maybe in yours or others case, a freshly opened bottle of Yuengling. I for one slow down for speed bumps and do not wish to punish or challenge my vehicles suspension.

By the way I drank my very first Yuengling at my neighbors a few days ago and it was so-so alright but I'll stick to my Bud Lights.

Wishing all a good day and a better one tomorrow from central Mich. in the small town of Owosso

I was going to avoid this conversation, but I for one like the purpose of speed bumps for those who are disrepectful of the speed limits in neighborhoods and shopping centers.  After thinking about this the past couple of days, I am reminded of a story my mom's dad told several times.  He was logging around Lenoir City, TN and he had a Studebaker wagon with a broken wheel.  His counterparts had Connestoga wagons and some others and they would run in and out of the camp in a hurry.  They had to do many repairs.  All the while he would move all his wood with his broken wheel, never had a repair because he took it slower with his broken wheel.  His wagon lasted as long as theirs and he made a living moving logs to the sawmill.
Ok, I'm out of this conversation.
