Okay..... Let's stop the BS.. I only mentioned it to show how easy it is to get off topic and to show that it is NO BIG DEAL AT ALL.. Infact most of the comments could come in real handy, offering additional information to someone may give them the insight they have not yet thought of. FOR THE RECORD..... I AM NOT POINTING A FINGER AT ANYONE, I AM NOT TAKING SIDES, no I am not yelling just don't know how to highlight yet. I came back to this sight not because of the forum, or the information. I can read and write, so I can get info from anywhere, I came back to this sight simply because of the members. With that said I will say this..... I don't care if we are talking about trees and someone wants to start talking about the birds and bees. As long as we can help someone, be friends, and have fun at the same time, it's fine with me. To be honest I like it when the guys conversate back and forth and throw a little humor in. |

I'm going to be sectioning off a piece of my basement as a new bedroom and was wondering what options were acceptably available to us.
The floor in the basement is a solid concrete slab and 2 of the 4 walls are going to be existing structures. Would it be acceptable to use 'Liquid Nails' to secure the base plate to the concrete? I have a few physical disabilities that will prevent me from doing any major nailing into something as tough as cement.
Now someone explain WHAT is OFF TOPIC when a poster asked "what options were acceptably available". Isn't the key word here OPTIONS. Now that covers a lot of possibles.
We have a member undertaking his first major project so shouldn't we be supplying him with all of our knowledge we gained from other members and our own screw up mistakes. Let's give him all the information he will need from start to finish, without his having to make a dozen different post. |

Yes, galvanized steel certainly will rust, it can be primed though. And I don't want to ruffle any feathers but pressure treated wood will hold a lot of moisture and it is an ideal place for mold to grow.

Aluminum will degrade by what is called electrolysis, it does require primer just like any other metals.

Me too! But some don't like it. Or can't handle it. Maybe just read the post and not read into them some alternative message. |

Try this site for some excellent information on Basement remodeling "framing" from Family Handyman web site and magazines.
You stated this is your "First" major project and I hope this information will make that job much easier for you.
Yea some will say I'm off topic but actually these naysayers are the one's that are "OFF TOPIC" and to them I say help the poster with your knowledge instead of worrying about how PROPER some of the posters here are. Who among us has the right to say what is or isn't on or off topic as long as it pertains to the Posters original question.
Ok I'm off my soapbox.

Oldman, I didn't mention "off topic". I was complaining about comments related to the recent forum hissy fit. I don't give a hoot about "off topic". |

FINALLY got started on this project and it's moving along nicely. Took ya'll's advice and got a Ramset nailer for the sole plates.
Here's a few pics of the work so far:
This is the door to the 25 square foot closet my 9 year old is getting...
The backside of the closet just to show the joining of walls and how I secured them to the floor joists. |

And since I can only attach 3 pictures at a time...
Here's some more!
These 2 guys were WONDERFUL investments. I can't even think of doing this job without them.
And finally, here's a wider view of the window wall.

Hi beanman1, It's good to know that the forums were of help to you. It looks like the project is moving along nicely. I'll apologise for the fact that your post got caught up in the ( off-topic) spat that was going on at the time. These things don't happen often, so I hope you'll continue with us. The photos are great. |

Looks good!
One thing you may have to adjust for is that window.
Building code requires a minimum 24" height and 20" width for emergency egress in bedroom basements. |

The window measures 40" x30", so we have that covered. |

No, no, no, no, no. Don't mistake me that fast. Looking at the photo you attached, you have a double hung window. DON'T MEASURE THE ENTIRE WINDOW. OPEN THE LOWER SECTION AND MEASURE THE GAP/OPENING TO THE OUTSIDE. That lower section cannot be less than 24" high and 20" wide. Minimum egress is 5.7 square feet by code. While you are still framing things in...do it right the first time. Everyone has time to do the job the right way the second time (rework or prior to selling the home), but for some reason there's never enough time to do it right the first time. Look. My bride and I had seven children. One son and six daughters. We now have one son and two daughters. Four of our daughters were killed in an auto accident. I'm trying to spare you and yours a lot of grief. If something happens in your home you will be playing the "what if/why didn't I" mind game until you stop breathing and get carted off to the morgue. It's been years since we lost four of daughters...and not a week goes by that I don't ask me those questions. Think and plan in advance. Do it right the first time and by using the the minimum standard (code). |

I know the author stated in another thread that the room has a door for egress, but since we are on windows, isn't there also a maximum distance from the floor the egress window can be? I'm thinking it's about 30" to 3ft above the floor to the sill but I may be wrong o that. It may not pertain to this post but others who are thinking of adding a bedroom may be wondering too. |
