Sixty posted one of these a couple years ago, and when my granddaughter seemed to not be adventurous, this toy came to mind.  It seems to be working.  Someone said they wanted to see my version, so here it is.

Circles rough cut from the bandsaw jig I made.

Had waited to get a photo of granddaughter using it, but she will never face the camera. The wheels indicate some usage.  She took a half block away on the sidewalk and brought it back.  Yes, it could already use a paint job.

Eric suggested that the kit was available, so I purchased it for $20, the plans for about $10.  The kit included the shaker and wheel pegs, the wheels, the black spacer balls, the eyes and rope.  Thanks, Eric.  That suggestion saved me many cuts and drilling.  As Sixty knows, the green pieces are round only on the top side, but straight across the bottom.  This is 27" long and those wheels make plenty of noise.

Footnote, Valspar in aerosol cans is oil based as I coated them with lacquer.  Blistered and crinkled.  LOL  Sorry I didn't notice that the mouth didn't show in the pic.  Thanks, Sixty for a fun project.

    That is great!

(okay, I edited mine two times)

If that caterpillar wouldn't make a granddaughter happy, I can't think of what would!

    Keep up the good work.

Sorry, HR.  While trying to attach pix, I accidentally clicked the submit button.  Had to edit to get pix included.  Hope you see it now.

    Great job..
Sounds as if your granddaughter has a lot of fun with it.
Other wise the paint would not be worn off of it.

Mighty nice toy and great paint job!  Long road to get there, but the look on her face made it no big deal...

I'm sure I've seen this in a book...   Read too much and a poor memory...  LOL

Thanks, everyone.  Yes, Sixty, the paint was a bear.  And, I did  the goofiest thing.  Worked in a paint/graphic arts shop for 9 years and so knew better than what I did.  Purchase Valspar paint in a can.  No where on the label did it say what type of paint, so I assumed that it was lacquer. Now, we all know what ass - u - me does.  The temps weren't quite warm enough for it to set properly and get rid of the tackiness.  So, mentioned it to John K. in a PM and he strongly suggested not to put poly over it.  Before I got to read his remarks, I had put some lacquer over it.  Wrong!!!!!!!  As I had previously posted, immediately, it went into a crinkle finish.  It was too obvious that the Valspar was oil based.  So, back to Lowe's for some paint remover.  Bought a small bucket and poured in enough remover to come to the top of the circles.  That stuff ate the paint right off.  Took a chipping brush and rubbed the surface with it and it cleaned all the wood pieces.  Let it dry another day.  After all, I waited for that stuff to dry for 10 days.  So, remembered that I had a whole stash of paints from Michaels that complied with children's safety laws.  Put on two coats and then sprayed them with clear lacquer.  Worked very well.  Yes, the paint job took the most time and Christmas was fast approaching.  But, it was completed and marked on the bottom with USA.  Don't know if I'll ever do another.  Depends on the daughter.  Makes lots of noise with all those wheels.  LOL

Showed this to a teacher.  Mistake!!!!  Now she wants one for her students.  You know what is going to happen.  More teachers will want one.  Dang!  No more showing.  LOL  Be careful who you show your work to.  It may become a business.
