I have my workshop at one end of  my basement it has to small room that are walled off and insulated the rest of the baement is unfinished and uninsulated a total of appox 2300 sq.ft. it has poured walls and I use NG forced air to heat my home. I have 1 register over my work shop and another about 30 ft. away the biggest part of the basement is just used as storage for the grown kids that don't have room in there house. Should I leave these vents open year around or just open the one for my work area when I am down there? The home is appox. 10 yrs old w/2x6 walls well insulated. I spend more time down there in the winter months than I do int  the summer. I live in N. Central Indiana where the Good Lord lost his overshoes and never bothered to come back looking for them.

In basements - I like air movement. Is there an air return in the basement or just those registers?

    I agree with Graig.

I like air movement in the basement.
It helps control moisture. I have my vents are open just enough to give some air flow, maybe less the 1/4 the way.

Craig, just the registers.  When I bought the place there were no registers in the basement, just 2 duct pipes coming off the main run, I added the registers.

Along with air movement, if your basement is ,moist, make sure you put a dehumidifier down there too so that all your tools stay rust free. I had a basement shop for many years in Syracuse, NY. In the cold months I also used a small ceramic heater to warm up the shop before I went to work. Always nicer to work with the tools with warm hands.

Basement is dry and I do have a dehumidafier, thinking of hanging an old ceiling fan that I have just laying around that would better than the box fan it would be up and out of the way. Got to get my shop laid out some day,  I've just got everything in 1 section I've got plenty of room just got to get it done. Thanks for the replys
