It's about time they redo the rating.,
What I find very interesting on that label is the fact that the vehicle gets 20 mph but on E85 it gets 12 mph. That's a 40 % drop. I don't see E85 being 40% less $$.

    WW,
I think I just figured out why our lovely GOVERNMENT is pushing the mandatory use of 'ethanol' based gasoline, especially the E85.  It's because since it gets so much poorer FUEL ECONOMY (BTW: that's MPG and not MPH), we are using more gallons of gasoline to travel a given distance.  Since the taxes on a gallon of gasoline are pretty much the same, regardless of the type of gas (ethanol or pure gas), if we use MORE GAS (gallons), then we PAY MORE IN TAXES.  It's WIN/WIN for the government and LOSE/LOSE for us consumers.

As an aside, they would probably try to explain the ADDED REPAIRS caused to engines and yard equipment when using ETHANOL based gasoline as 'stimulating the economy' by creating more work/jobs for the repair persons and increases in yard equipment (replacement) sales.

I don't know where 40% less MPG on E85 comes from.  Pure ethanol is only 30% less MPG than gasoline and E85 is only  15% ethanol.  I am firmly against the use of any alcohol in our automobiles, but let's get the facts right.

    Racer,

E85 is actually 85% ethanol and only 15% gasoline.

    ALCOHOL FUEL CONVERSION KITS

We sell alcohol fuel conversion systems that allow gasoline-operated vehicles to run on ethanol, gasoline, or any combination of the two. We offer the most advanced conversion kits on the market, which come equipped with a five-year warranty and are MADE IN THE USA, with customer service you can depend on. Our conversion kits can be installed on any vehicle with a fuel-injection system. Although often referred to as E-85 (85% ethanol; 15% gas) kits,  they are actually designed to work perfectly well on home-produced E-100 straight ethanol.

Ethanol is less expensive than gas, is better for your car’s engine, delivers more horsepower, significantly reduces emissions, and is rapidly becoming more available worldwide. Alcohol fuel conversion kits have been in use for over 20 years in Brazil and have been successfully installed on approximately 50,000 cars. There have been no reports of engine damage resulting from conversion kits or from running on ethanol.

Ethanol is a much cleaner-burning fuel than gasoline, and it offers a significant reduction in carbon monoxide and hydrocarbon tailpipe emissions. Research has shown that every city and state that has switched to ethanol-blended fuel has experienced improved air quality. According to the United States Department of Energy, ethanol-blended fuels reduced CO2-equivalentgreenhouse gas emissions by 7.8 million tons in 2005 alone; this has the effect of removing more than 1 million automobiles from the road.

It's easy to get your gas-powered vehicle to run clean, American-grown freedom fuel! Car dealers and auto shops are now installing these kits as a service. If you don't want to install one yourself, we can help you locate an auto shop near you that can help.

I don't know why alcohol is even considered as a fuel.  The cost, when all is considered, is much higher than gasoline.  Alcohol gives lower MPG, lower horsepower, it absorbs water and caused problems with fuel systems. When corn is used to make alcohol, it isn't going to feed livestock so food costs go up.  Alcohol is all around a BAD idea.  Yes, Brazil uses it in 90% of their vehicles and the cost is mostly subsidized by the government.  We can't afford to have the government subsidize any more industries.  We have an abundance of natural gas in this country.  It makes for a much better fuel.  It gives good mileage, burns clean, and is very cost effective.  Get the oil lobbyist out of the pockets of our legislators and build a distribution system and we've got OPEC out of here.

Amen, Racer.  My Toyota Sienna used to get 21 mpg 3 years ago when I could find pure gasoline.  Now, at 27,000 miles, the efficiency is now down to 19.1 mpg.  I still baby it on take offs and stops.  Folks around me get mad and they burn their fuel getting around me.  Some pull just a few feet in front of me.  Then I just coast until they get out of the way while I save my money.  I have mold growing around the gas neck between washes (once per month) and in older cars, the rubberized gaskets would be dried out from ethanol, so more maintenance.  I don't have the funds or time to do all the repairs associated with ethanol.  I don't see a win unless it's the Chevy Volt.
