I have a Sears tiller 785.50727 that was made by General Power - Magna in the late 50's - early 60's.
The gear case is cracked at the mounting flange and I have not had a chance to show it to a
welder to see if it is repairable. I think it is aluminum.
This tiller has a Tecumseh engine 143.151082 which I would guess is around 2 - 3 horsepower.
I do not know if this was an actual Sears product or a Magna prototype model - my father in law worked at Magna
    in the early 60's.
    Thanks, Steve

General Power Equipment was parent compamy of Atlas, Lawn Chief, and Wheeler out of Harvard, Illinois.

All three brands became the property of MTD.

Tillsmith was made by Magna American Corp.

    MTD now owns Magna American.

Steve, If the case is alum then it can be repaired.  I have repaired several bell housings & a lot of other alum parts. It is not to difficult if the shop has the right equipment.

    All; Thanks for your help.
I took the gear case to the local welder and he thinks that he can repair it.
I took it apart. Now I have to find the time to grind a grove in it along both sides of the crack so the welder has a place for the repair material.
The inside of this unit looked like new. Had a timken thrust bearing - brass bearing on the input shaft and needle bearings on the output shaft.
    This unit had light usage.
