I got my real estate tax statement in the mail yesterday. I knew our mill levy was going up a little due to the economic situation. I think it was going up 13 mils. I figured on an increase of about $125 on my taxes. I dad gummed near had a heart attack when I opened those things up. My taxes went from $1068 to $2014. an 88% jump in one year! My assessed value had gone up 74.8% in addition to the mil levy increase. All I've done this year is paint the trim and replace the dishwasher. I asked 3 different people what their taxes had done and they had all gone up but none of them had almost doubled. So I called the county appraisor's office. She put me on hold and went to look me up. A minute or so later, she got back on giggling. She said, "I don't know what happened but we made a little mistake on your assessment. You're valuation didn't go up at all. I'll send you out a new statement." Geez. Little mistake, my butt. I was about ready to mount a recall effort on all 3 commissioners. Mike SE Kansas. Would not have been a problem for me at all Mike... I'd of had a heart attack and died right then and there.. someone else's problem to 'fix' after that... LOL Good to see they are 'fixing' the problem... How can they justify an increase in valuation anyway? Most all housing markets have dropped by at least 20%... some markets by 50%.. Interesting. Ez There isn't any handyman problem that a judicious amount of money can't fix... Bradford county Pa.

The valuation ended up not going up, just the mil levy. Our school district went up 3.25 mils to cover some much needed improvements. The City went up a half mil to pay for replacing the water lines that Noah probably installed. And the County went up 9 mils to pay for changing our pothole system into an actual county road system. I can handle a hundred or so, like it will end up being. Mike SE Kansas. Land of Ah's.

WOW!!!!!!! Taxes that low are almost unheard of around here. The average real estate tax bill, around towns here, is anywhere from over $5,000 to over $6,000. Add water bills, sewer bills and other fees. Then the state wants their share. 5% income tax, 6 1/4% sales tax and the list goes on.The're even talking about increasing our gasoline taxes by another .22 cents a gallon. It's great living in Taxachusetts. Fortunately for me, I own a mobilehome with about 3/4 acres of land. With the abatement that the town allows for disabled veterans, my taxes are about $1600.

Kansas has its little ways of making sure we pay our fair share, Cedar. Like the property tax on motor vehicles that starts out at anywhere from $500 up to a grand or so on a new one. Then they tax you a little less each year as the vehicle gets older. Then there's the State, County and City sales taxes. Road use taxes, fuel taxes, tire tax. (We pay 50 cents a tire to the state for every new vehicle we sell each month including the 50 cents a tire we sell over the counter.) They really get to us on rebates. If we sell a new car for $25,000 and it has a rebate of $3,000, we gotta charge sales tax on the $25,000 instead of $22,000. Now, if you get up into Johnson County, those thousand dollar real estate taxes on my house would be $1800-2200. Of course, if my house was in Johnson County, it would appraise at $125,000 instead of $70,000. My favorite one was when they finally got a State Lottery approved. Oh MY!!! The income we'll get from the Lottery will ALL go to the schools. The schools don't get squat from the Lottery. There you go. You got me started. Mike SE Kansas. Land of Ah's.

I would love to pay only $2014 in property taxes. My property taxes are about $9300 per year on a 2900 sq. ft. house on 1 acre. And I live in one of the cheaper counties in New Jersey. At least we have the cheapest gas of any state near us. Washington, NJ

Zip, I'm about 15 miles from the Pennsylvania border. It's about 45 miles or so due west of NYC. We are the part of New Jersey that no one knows exists. Everyone thinks New Jersey is all like Hoboken and Newark. We have hills and farms. I live on the side of a mountain(hill) in the middle of 1000 acres of wooded property overlooking 3 or 4 farms. I always find it amazing how politicians can figure out ways to 'hide' the actual taxes. Mill rate, assessed valuation, etc. Let's just call it what it is TAXES! And they rarely go down.
