Hello everyone, new post about a Peerless/Tecumseh transaxel for a lawn tractor.
My wife was using her 1997 Wizard lawn tractor which has a Peerless transaxel,
and she told me that it had hung up in 4th gear. She could not get into  neutral, reverse or any other gear. I began trying to get it to work normally but with no luck either!

I did manage to get the tractor into my shop, jacked it up and removed the transaxel unit to try
   and find the problem.
I did the following things to eliminate the problem(s) but am still confused and stumped.
 (1) complete removal of unit from tractor
 (2) removed large top drive pulley
 (3) removed all bolts and separated case halves and checked entire gear train, found no damage
to any gear, chain assembly, shafts, bearings, gear shifting /selector mechanism, in other words
no reason apparent reason for failure.
(4) With gear selector mechanism, moved it through each gear position and rotated axel by
hand and looked for proper movement of gears and any chipped, broken, teeth damage
      to assembly.....found nothing!
 (5) Reassembled case halves, re-installed gear selector in proper position with the spring and
detent ball and allen screw, checked unit again....still for some unknown reason, it is somewhat
hard to change from 4th gear to 3rd gear but not too hard to change lower gears or from
reverse to 1st gear or to 2nd gear...........what is going on here? is this the normal wear and
tear? or did I miss something? I don't want to re-install the unit until I'm satisfied that it is
working as it should..........any and all help from you all would be greatly appreciated
      and thanks in advance.  jheffner

Is anything bent?  It doesn't take much sometimes to cause problems.  Can you try moving each part of the shifter assembly individually?  A stiff joint somewhere can translate into a very hard shift.

Since you said you checked everything while turning it by hand, I will assume that the clutch not disengaging properly isn't the problem.

Sorry that is all I can think of that might cause problems, since you listed everything else I would have suggested checking.

jdeere, I could not find anything bent, damaged, missing , broken or otherwise awry.
I went through that complete transaxel again from top to bottom and front to rear
today and still nothing....so I decided to re-assemble it and put in back in the tractor
and see what it would do. I did that this afternoon, and I'm glad to report but still a little
bewildered that all is again working normally! I don't have the foggiest idea what I did
to correct the problem but I'm glad it is fixed for now anyway.  I did play with the gear
selector detent ball and spring. I tried it with varying amounts of tension on the spring
and how it related to the gear selection until I found a good feel to the selector at that point
and locked her in place and reinstalled the transaxel in the tractor. So, if anyone has any
ideas....chime in, it may be helpful to the next person who has a similar problem with
a lawn tractor. Thanks....jheffner
