Model HAV2360AWW.
Machine is making a heck of a racket. Took the belt off and motor ran quiet. Water pump felt smooth. Pulley to the transmission didn't drag in either direction. The machine did complete the spin cycle and pumped the water out. Let it run a partial cycle and the agitator worked fine, but it just made the noise. The machine is only 7 years old and probably worth fixing. I had heard there was a period where the Maytag's were not as good as their reputation. I wold appreciate any and all suggestions.

That period of junk Maytag's started about 10 years ago, machines lost all value, company lost reputation and was eventually bought out by Whirlpool.
Your problem could easily be a bad transmission, but might also be in the pump. You can't spin it by hand fast enough to create a problem. Look above the pulley, between pulley and body of pump. Can you see a shiny corrugated piece of metal coming up from under the pulley? This 'waffle spring' is a major fault in these pumps; works it's way out and catches on the body, chatters and eventually can lock it up.

Have to agree with jimctec.......
I get a Maytag noise washer call I bring in a pump and the belts.
Give it a listen and replace all three.
Pump for the noise belts cause I'm there.
Old ones given to the customer in case one fails.
Its there if needed. If it has two 2 belts take the pump belt off and run it see if it makes a noise

I'm about 200 miles from the machine. When I was working with it, the noise was still going in the regular wash cycle as it agitated. I'm willing to replace the pump and belt on the chance that it would fix the problem. If it turns out to be the transmission, are there any special tools I would need to R&R the transmission? It has to be cheaper than a new one.

A trans will run you $300.00 + - with miscellaneous parts seal, bearings, and a few hours of your time.
Could remove some parts from the old one but that will add more time.
Next time run the washer and with a cardboard paper towel tube put it up to the pump and the other to your ear.
This may help locate the noise.

Some of us are just plain short a donut. I figured since the pump wasn't pumping that it could not be making the noise, but heck, the pump is still turning. Will an automotive engine stethascope work like the paper tube? The tube is short. I have used a broom handle and laid it behand my ear and that woks on an engine. I may not b able to get to it before thw weekend of the 13th.

A mechanics stethoscope is the tool to use if you have one.
Harbor Freight has some.
Mine is a stethoscope / decibel meter
The 12"cardboard tube is if you don't have the tool.
If the paper towel tube is to short could always try gift wrapping paper tube or a mailing tube seen them 6' long.
Broom handle 1 1/2" PVC pipe anything that can help to locate and amplify the sound is good.

Whirlpool just recently bought Maytag and inherited their junk.
But I am told they are working on all the problems.
I personally wouldn't buy a Maytag yet for a year or 2

What I have seen is the Maytag of yesterday is gone and is all Whirlpool except of the logos.

Whirlpool bought Maytag in 2006. Their objective is to "Put the Maytag back into Maytag" Yes, today’s Maytag’s are built on the same platform as Whirlpool but there are subtle changes. In top load agitator machines a commercial transmission with synthetic oil and a commercial coupler are used along with stainless drums in some models. Dryers have larger drum rollers and a wider drive belt. Across the whole line Whirlpool is giving warranty advantages to Maytag on all 2010 High Efficiency top load and front load models with a 10 year motor warranty.

Maytag fell on there face when they bought AMANA....
Re engineered the crap they had......
All down hill from there.......
Always wanted to file a Class Action Civil Suit against Maytag. "Defamation of Caritor"
That stupid ad of theirs..... Lonely sit around pet the dog all day SERVICE MAN...........
Just what you want to see when your eating your cold dinner after a 16 hour day of fixing their crap.
And yes three years ago was 2006..............................................
